A Holistic Approach to Mental & Physical Transformation

by Ms Meetal Koticha Shah,
Joint Executive Trustee & CEO – Project ‘Life’ & Senior Vice-Chairperson, Gujarat SCC

Mental health & wellness has become a major concern for a vast population of today’s fast paced, competitive world infused with insecurities, incessant demands on deliverance and performance specific stress. Anxieties, depression and addictions have prevailed over healthy lifestyle, degenerating human existence and disintegrating societal fabric.

We strive for happiness and inner peace but find no over the counter cure for these impediments and quality of life continues to deteriorate.

As the world begins to awaken to this discordant impairment, Yoga has emerged as the viable response, as the saviour that promises salvation and succour sans any gadgetry or gimmicks to usher mankind towards spiritual happiness and tranquillity.

Yoga promotes harmony between mind, body, and soul through knowledgably envisioned Asanas (postures), Pranayam (breathing practices) and Dhyaan (meditation), nurturing a deep sense of self-awareness and rejuvenation.

Scientific research in recent years has demonstrated how Yoga transforms human wellbeing by invigorating the physique holistically, touching critical areas of life:

Stress: Yoga activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing production of stress hormones like cortisol, leading to significant reduction in stress and its harmful effects on mental health.

Emotional balance: Through focussed breathing and meditation, Yoga helps in dealing with emotions without judgment, fostering emotional intellect and allowing rational response to challenges with calm composure.

Mood: Yoga stimulates release of endorphins, the “feel-good” hormones, leading to improved disposition and reduced depression and anxiety.

GABA levels: Yoga enhances production of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter, reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation.

Cognitive function: Yoga increases attention, memory and cognitive flexibility, leading to improved cognitive function.

Embrace Yoga into life

Find an appropriate form that suits from the various forms like Hatha yoga, Vinyasa yoga, Ashtanga yoga and more. Experiment with different forms to determine the form that brings a positive change.

Start slow. Begin with beginner-friendly coaching, not pushing hard, listening to the inner voice and progress gradually.
Adopt regular practice. Consistency is key to benefit from this ancient science. Set aside dedicated time and day for effective benefit.

Integrate yoga, meditation and pranayama as a wholesome approach for enhanced health benefits.
Avail professional guidance. Experienced instructors can provide authentic guidance and ensure optimum performance and benefit.

Embracing Yoga is enriching life with peace, happiness and harmony.
Let us resolve to achieve a healthier, happier co-existence in this excruciating times.

Let us find a deep sense of well-being.
Let us begin the journey to transformation.
