Ayurvedic Khichdi
Sattvik Recipe

Ayurvedic Khichdi

By Dr. Anjali Swami, Anjali Acupressure Treatment & Yoga Center, Associate Centre, IYA

Khichdi is more than just comfort food—it’s a time-honored Ayurvedic dish known for its healing, detoxifying, and nourishing properties. Gentle on the stomach and rich in nutrients, this simple yet sacred meal balances the body’s energies and supports digestion. Ideal for all ages, especially for children, Khichdi is a perfect blend of plant-based protein and carbohydrates that harmonizes nutrition with inner calm.

Ingredients:

1 cup yellow moong dal (split yellow lentils)
½ cup basmati rice
1 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter)
½ teaspoon cumin seeds
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
4 cups of water
Salt to taste
Fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped (for garnish)
Preparation:

Cleanse and Soak: Rinse the moong dal and basmati rice thoroughly until the water runs clear. Soak for about 10–15 minutes to ease cooking and enhance digestibility.
Sattvic Tempering: In a heavy-bottomed pot, warm the ghee over a gentle flame. Add the cumin seeds and let them splutter. Stir in the turmeric and asafoetida—these sacred spices awaken the digestive fire (agni) and lend a calming aroma to the dish.
Cook with Love: Add the soaked dal and rice to the pot. Pour in the water and stir gently. Let it simmer on low heat until the grains break down and the mixture becomes soft and creamy—approximately 25–30 minutes.
Season and Serve: Add salt to taste and stir well. Serve warm, garnished with freshly chopped coriander for a touch of freshness and healing prana (life force).
A Bowl of Balance: This soul-soothing khichdi is ideal for times of detox, recovery, or when the body craves grounding nourishment. It aligns perfectly with yogic principles of mindful eating and sattvic living.

Let each spoonful be a step toward inner stillness and radiant health. s
