Svarga Dvijasana
Practice of the Month

Svarga Dvijasana

by Krishna Wellness, Yoga and Cultural Centre, Associate Centre, Indian Yoga Association

Meaning of the Svarga Dvijasana

Svarga – “Heaven”
Dvija – “Twice-born”
Asana – “Pose”

Together, Svarga Dvijasana symbolizes the blossoming of the spirit, much like a bird emerging into the light of the sky—a graceful representation of freedom, strength, and balance.

What is Bird of Paradise Pose?

Svarga Dvijasana is an advanced standing balance pose that challenges your strength, flexibility, and focus. It involves standing on one leg while extending the other, with the arms bound around the extended leg. The posture deeply stretches the hamstrings, groins, shoulders, and chest, while building strength in the core, legs, and back.

Benefits

Enhances balance, flexibility, and coordination
Strengthens the core, glutes, calves, and hip muscles
Deeply stretches the hamstrings, shoulders, chest, and groins
Improves posture and alignment
Encourages mental focus and concentration
Develops a strong sense of body awareness
Builds resilience through challenge and controlled effort

Tips for Practicing

Take your time and progress gradually
Use props like a strap to help with the bind if needed
Be gentle and patient with your body
Focus on your breath to stay centered
Engage your core to maintain stability

How to Practice

Start in Warrior II, front knee bent, back leg strong.
Exhale, bring front arm under thigh and back arm behind to bind hands.
Rotate chest upward into Bound Extended Side Angle.
Step back foot forward to meet front foot.
Straighten both legs and shift weight to unbound leg.
Lift the bound leg off the floor, keeping it bent.
Engage core, lift torso upright with steady gaze.
Extend the lifted leg forward while keeping hips stable.
To release, bend both legs slightly, lean forward, and release the bind.
