Role of Auto-Suggestions in Mindful Living

by Smt Meetal Koticha Shah

Human mind is often a repository of stress, negative thoughts, and unproductive patterns, especially in present times of competitiveness and pressurised lifestyle.

In order to counteract the ill effects, the technique of auto-suggestions can be an effective means to bridge the gap between conscious intention and subconscious transformation. This technique in modern psychology, resonates well with ancient yogic wisdom within practice of meditation which can be supportive to achieve mindful living, concentration, peace of mind and personality development.

Meditation is an ideal practice to achieve mental clarity, emotional balance, and inner and outwardly spiritual connection. While traditional methods like mantra chanting, breath control, and mindfulness remain widely acknowledged, incorporating auto-suggestion into meditation can help as a transformative tool for practitioners.

Auto-suggestions are deliberate affirmations or mental directions designed to influence the subconscious mind; purposeful, focused and objective, repeated with conviction and aligned with desired goals and state of being.

In yogic philosophy, auto-suggestion relates to the practice of Sankalpa which may be in the form of a mantra, an affirmation, or a silent intention; which aims to direct the mind’s focus to cultivate determination toward a desired outcome, creating a harmonious interplay between the conscious and subconscious.

Auto-Suggestion can be remarkably effective during meditation in many ways:

Focus Enhancement: During meditation, the mind often wanders. Auto-suggestions act as anchors, bringing the mind back to a focused state. For instance, repeating phrases like “I am calm and centred” helps the practitioner maintain mindfulness.

Emotional Regulation: Positive affirmations replace negative or stressful thoughts, creating a serene mental environment conducive to deep meditation.

Mind-Body Connection: Auto-suggestion works on the principle of neuroplasticity, helping to rewire the brain. Statements like “My breath brings peace to my body” deepen relaxation and awareness.

Self-Empowerment: Auto-suggestion builds confidence and optimism, creating a foundation for meditation that is free from self-doubt or distractions.

Using Auto-Suggestion in Meditation in simple steps:

Preparing the mind by sitting in a quiet space comfortably with straight spine and relaxed body.
Choosing positive phrases, simple, specific, and affirming statements that align with meditation goals, like:

“I am at peace with myself and the world.”
“ Each breath fills me with energy and clarity.”
Repeating the phrase with intention by closing the eyes and silently or audibly.
Visualizing the meaning with repetition of the auto-suggestions, for instance, if the affirmation is “I am free from stress,” imagining to be in a state of complete relaxation.
Combining auto suggestion with traditional practices like pranayama, mantra chanting, or mindfulness.

Benefits of Auto-Suggestion in Meditation
Improved Concentration: Keeps the mind steady and focused.
Stress Reduction: Promotes a calm and relaxed state.
Increased Positivity: Fosters a hopeful and constructive mind-set.
Personal Growth: Helps to overcome mental blocks and achieve spiritual goals.

Auto-suggestion enhances the meditation experience by aligning the conscious and subconscious mind. It aids in achieving mental clarity and fosters emotional well-being and spiritual growth. Incorporating this technique in meditation practice can transform the journey toward a more balanced and harmonious life.

Let’s begin, choose our affirmation, breathe deeply, and let the inner transformation start!

“The power to change your mind lies in the words you suggest to it.”
