Self-love isn’t selfish

The longest and most important relationship you will ever have is the one you have with yourself. Despite this, most people cannot truly love and accept themselves in mind, body and soul. People who can truly accept themselves are wonderful – beaming with a sense of warmth and radiating positive energy that makes others feel comfortable in their presence. Self-love is being undoubting in your resolutions, believing in one’s own aptitude and converting your limitations into strengths. Yoga is your path to self-love and finding your true self.
The human state of living in a constant state of self-doubt and anguish is a result of a societal belief that self-love is selfish, and selflessness is the only way to be good. We must reset the rules of a society that believes that self-care equals selfishness. Yoga talks of acceptance of the self; every person must develop their own special and unwavering relationship with the self to fabricate the sacred knot of body, mind and soul.

The above is an excerpt taken from “Yoga through the Self, by the Self and to the Self” by Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra, published in Yogasattva 06/19, p. 5.
