Swami Sivananda Saraswati Maharaj of Rishikesh. The purpose of the centre is to bring yoga in all its aspects to a wider audience both in the West and in India.

The organisation is now considered to be one of the largest and most influential of its kind in the world. It is dedicated to the teaching of classical, traditional yoga, commonly referred to as Sivananda Yoga, to as wide a public as possible. The unprecedented work of the organisation has now assumed worldwide dimensions and is in addition credited with being largely responsible for the popularity of yoga today.
