How to Prepare for Practical Examination?

by Dr Charu Sharma, Yoga Technical Manager, Indian Yoga Association Personnel Certification Board

Previously, we had discussed about theory exam preparation. In this issue, we will discuss about preparation of practical part of examination. IYA PrCB, with the consent of YCB makes a panel of three teachers, each from different organization to evaluate the practical exam. This examination is done under five subheadings-

S. No.Practical SkillMarks
1Demonstration Skill60
2Teaching Skill 20
3Evaluation Skill20
4Application of knowledge10
5Application of knowledge10
Total120

Demonstration Skill –

In this skill, student will be asked to demonstrate Asana, Pranayama, Mudra and Bandha from the given syllabus. Students will be evaluated on the basis of starting the practice, process of practice, stability, time to maintain, and facial expression means regular practice. Three Asana, 2 Breathing practice, one Mudra and one Bandha can be given during demonstration practice.

Demonstration part comprises of presentation and knowledge of skill both. For testing knowledge examiner will ask questions on the related topics from the syllabus.

Teaching Skill –

Student has to show his/her teaching skill. During evaluation teacher will give one theory and one practical topic from syllabus to teach or give instruction to other candidates. Student will be assessed on the basis of instructions, voice clarity, confidence, content of given topic etc.

Evaluation Skill-

Students will be asked to give marks out of 10 (for example) to other participant during practical teaching and then teacher will ask the reason to give particular marks to candidate.

Application of knowledge –

Student will be given an example-question related to real circumstances of therapy and will be asked to answer as teacher.

Field Experience –

Students have to show his experience certificate in related field, if he/she is working with some organization. If candidate is doing his own work then will be asked about self declaration with picture during classes and case study of candidates to know the authenticity. It also helps students to make their portfolio for other places. YCB has given clear criteria for marking of this criterion.

Candidate need to qualify examination with 70 percent marks. Practical part of yoga is also important like theory. Therefore, we need to learn to practice it under the observation of authentic teacher who knows the basics of yoga.
